The AP listed is the total, not the amount til next level.
There are no materia that increase Strength. The idea is that the more magic powers you give the character, the weaker they become physically. There are some non-magical materia that increase other stats, but none for Strength.
The easiest way I've found to level up materia is to give it to Cloud in his Apocalypse or Cid in his Scimitar (those both have 3x the normal AP earned in battle). After that, I go to the Crashed Gelinka and fight the unknowns because they give a large amount of AP. If you're not strong enough to reliably kill those, the enemies in the forest around Mideel give pretty good AP for how easy their fight is. Hope this helps.

But you weren't too clear on the AP needed for materia level-up. Is it from 0ap or from the start of the level.
Also is there any materia that has a positive effect on Strength.
Great site! Keep up the good work!
